CoRE Co-organizes Conference on Sustainable Horizons:
navigating geopolitics, energy security, and green transitions in Africa
In a significant step towards advancing sustainable development, the CoRE co-organized a high-impact conference in Addis Ababa, focused on pressing global and regional challenges in sustainability. The event brought together prominent academics, policy experts, and industry leaders to engage in discussions that aim to reshape Africa’s sustainable development strategies.
Session 1: Geopolitical Shifts and Innovative Financing for Sustainable Development
Moderated by Dan Banik, this session critically explored the evolving global political landscape and its implications for sustainable development. Panelists, including Dr. Ragnhild Dybdahl of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Prof. Happy Kayuni from the University of Malawi, and Mr. Adugna Nemera of the World Resources Institute, examined how shifting alliances and emerging economies are influencing global priorities. The session also discussed innovative financing mechanisms that can support sustainability initiatives while addressing risks in the current geopolitical climate.
Session 2: Strengthening Energy Security on the African Continent
Moderated by Johanna Adolfsson and Tyler Barrott, this session addressed the critical nexus between energy access, economic development, and environmental sustainability in Africa. Panelists, such as Prof. Michael Chasukwa of the University of Malawi, Prof. Alemu Mekonnen from Addis Ababa University, and Mr. Elmi Nuri of DCA, explored strategies for securing Africa’s energy supplies and enhancing grid reliability. The session emphasized leveraging Africa’s renewable energy potential to meet the continent’s growing energy demands while minimizing environmental impact.
Session 3: Promising Practices on Green Transitions in Ethiopia and the Continent
In the final session, moderated by Dr. Abiy Zegeye of Addis Ababa University, panelists highlighted innovative green transition practices across Africa, with a special focus on Ethiopia. Prof. Belay Simane of Addis Ababa University, Mr. Nigusu Aklilu from Destiny Ethiopia, and Mr. Benti Firdissa of the Ministry of Planning and Development, shared successful case studies of sustainable urbanization, industrial modernization, and climate resilience. The discussion emphasized the importance of policy implementation, community engagement, and public-private partnerships in driving Africa’s green transition.
This conference provided a platform for valuable exchange of ideas, insights, and strategies to address some of Africa’s most urgent sustainability and energy challenges.
