CoRE co-sponsored the GLOBALGOALS2024

Conference to Shape the Future of Sustainable Development

The CoRE co-sponsored GLOBALGOALS2024, held on August 29-30 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The event aimed to foster global discussions on the future of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the years leading up to and beyond 2030.

GLOBALGOALS2024 served as a critical academic stepping stone for the upcoming UN Summit of the Future, providing a unique platform for scholars, researchers, and stakeholders to come together and share their perspectives on the future of SDGs and global sustainability governance. The conference offered an invaluable opportunity for the exchange of cutting-edge research and innovative ideas that can shape the trajectory of global sustainability efforts.

A key outcome of GLOBALGOALS2024 was the compilation of central recommendations for the UN Summit of the Future, which were documented in the conference’s official statement. These recommendations will play a crucial role in guiding future global sustainability initiatives and ensuring that the SDGs remain relevant and effective in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

Two members of the CoRE contributed their valuable research to the conference discussions. Prof. Maano Ramutsindela from the University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town shared his findings on “Integrating Global Goals into Higher Education Institutions: Emerging Trends.” Dr. Boniface Dulani from Afrobarometer and the University of Malawi presented his research on “Trends in Support for Democracy in Africa Versus Supply: Evidence from Afrobarometer Surveys.” Both studies provided critical insights into the global challenges and trends impacting the achievement of SDGs, especially in the context of education and democracy in Africa.

As a co-sponsor, the CoRE reinforced its commitment to supporting and advancing the global sustainability agenda, providing a space for rigorous academic debate and collaboration to drive meaningful change in SDG implementation.
