Roundtable Explores the Politics of Sustainability at Africa-Europe CoRE Event

On 1 October 2024, a roundtable hosted by Future Africa and the University of Oslo, focused on The Politics of Sustainable Development. The event was part of the inaugural Africa-Europe CoRE held at Stellenbosch University from 29 September to 2 October 2024.

Chaired by Professor Maano Ramutsindela, Future Africa Research Chair in Sustainability Transformations, the discussion addressed how power dynamics, historical contexts, and regional realities shape sustainability narratives in Africa. Dr. Heide Hackmann of Stellenbosch University and Associate Professor Aklilu Amsalu from Addis Ababa University contributed key insights on Africa’s need to redefine sustainability on its own terms.

A central theme of the discussion was the tension between global sustainability frameworks, like the SDGs, and Africa’s own priorities. Professor Ramutsindela questioned whether external policies align with Africa’s needs, stressing that sustainability should be driven by African communities, not imposed on them. Dr. Hackmann echoed these concerns, calling for more local representation in policymaking, while Associate Professor Amsalu highlighted the importance of inclusivity in sustainability policies.

The panelists also debated the relevance of global frameworks like the SDGs compared to Africa’s Agenda 2063. While the SDGs have dominated African research and funding, Amsalu noted that Agenda 2063 better reflects the continent’s priorities, though it often faces pressure to conform to global standards.

As the discussion continued, it became clear that sustainability in Africa must balance economic and environmental goals, addressing immediate survival needs alongside long-term sustainability. The importance of engaging local communities and adapting policies to the socio-economic realities of Africa was underscored.

In closing, Professor Ramutsindela affirmed that true sustainability requires empowering African communities to shape their own futures, ensuring that sustainability policies are both relevant and grounded in African contexts.
