UiO: Democracy Conference
In April 2024, UiO: Democracy hosted the Democracy Conference at the University of Oslo, addressing some of the most pressing issues facing democracy today. The event, a collaboration between the University of Oslo (through its interdisciplinary initiative UiO: Democracy) and Oslo Science City, brought together leading researchers, politicians, and societal actors to discuss the status of democracy both at home and abroad.
The conference covered a range of critical topics, including the democratic consequences of the war in Ukraine, the challenges posed by the climate and nature crisis, and the implications of digitalization and AI on democratic structures.
CoRE members, Prof. Dan Banik and Dr. Boniface Dulani, contributed their expertise to the discussions. Prof. Banik participated in a panel on Geopolitical Change and Democratic Developments, exploring the intersection of global shifts and democratic transitions. Together with Dr. Dulani, Prof. Banik also co-hosted a panel on The Green Transition in a North-South Perspective, discussing the implications of the green transition for both developed and developing nations.
The conference served as an important platform for reflecting on the evolving challenges to democracy and how various global dynamics, from geopolitics to technology, influence democratic practices worldwide.
