Research Agenda

The Africa–Europe Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE) on the Politics of Sustainable Development aims to advance interdisciplinary research, policy engagement, and knowledge co-production at the intersection of political power, governance, and sustainable development. Building on insights from Earth System Governance (ESG) and the quest to strengthen the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the CoRE’s overarching objective is to contribute evidence-based research and actionable recommendations that enhance the effectiveness of the SDGs and broader sustainability pathways at global, national, and local scales.

Program Pillars and Research Streams

The CoRE is organized around several interconnected research pillars, each designed to explore critical dimensions of sustainability politics. Collectively, these pillars form a holistic approach to understanding and shaping the governance of sustainable development.

Methodological Approaches

The CoRE program will adopt a variety of interdisciplinary methods: Comparative policy analysis, Quantitative and qualitative research, Participatory action research and Scenario building and modeling

Expected Outcomes and Impact

The CoRE aims to: Generate new knowledge, Inform policy and practice, Strengthen capacity-building, Promote inclusivity and equity and Catalyze transformational change

The CoRE Scientific Program on the Politics of Sustainable Development invites researchers, policymakers, civil society actors, and practitioners to collaborate in forging equitable, innovative, and enduring pathways toward global sustainability. By centering power dynamics, governance transformations, and inclusive epistemologies, this program seeks to contribute significantly to the realization of the SDGs and the broader vision of Earth System Governance—one that is more responsive, legitimate, and just.
